The astonishing scenes of violence that unfolded at a Trump rally in Chicago on Friday demonstrate just how far the Left is willing to go to silence its ideological opponents.

Make no mistake: the motley crew of black nationalists, socialist students, union thugs, and other assorted leftists who showed up to “protest” Trump’s Chicago rally were protesting nothing. They were there to shut down the event, to subvert Trump’s platform and to prevent his supporters from hearing the candidate speak.

“Remember the #TrumpRally wasn’t just luck,” tweeted the People For Bernie twitter account. “It took organizers from dozens of organizations and thousands of people to pull off. Great work.” Not only are these activists completely open about their desire to silence their ideological foes — they revel in it.

The organized nature of the protests seems only likely to impassion Trump supporters to defend their candidate and call out the Leftist intolerance and disruptive actions.

“I think if anything, the violence helps him with a lot of people,” said Andrew Davis, a Trump supporter. “Although many people will be put off by it, it really plays into his platform. It speaks to the people who feel as though their voice has been silenced by the Left for so long, to them this is just one more example of it.”

“I think people realize that it is the Left, so I think it will actually send voters to Trump,” said an anonymous GOP voter who would support Trump if he is the nominee. “Trump doesn’t want violence, the fact these organizations want to stop him fuels the need to elect him more.”

“All the rules that once governed our discourse have been blown away and we’re headed in a very dangerous direction,” Rubio opined on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday. But to claim, as he and the other candidates have, that what happened in Chicago is somehow the result of Trump’s allegedly violent rhetoric is blatantly dishonest.

Left-wing thuggery masquerading as “democracy in action” is nothing new in American politics, and can actually be traced directly to the cultural Marxist philosopher and member of the Frankfurt School, Herbert Marcuse.

Marcuse described a “liberating” tolerance that “would mean intolerance against movements from the Right and toleration of movements from the Left. As to the scope of this tolerance and intolerance … it would extend to the stage of action as well as of discussion and propaganda, of deed as well as of word.”

But this “liberating tolerance,” or rather blatant intolerance of anything remotely conservative, has been a standard fixture of American politics since the 1960s and assumed an unprecedented virulence since President Obama assumed power. His victory no doubt emboldened the progressive inquisition to seek out and destroy heretics with zeal.

Take, for example the Black Lives Matter movement, the black separatist group that riots every time a black criminal is shot or killed by a police officer. When it fomented unrest in Ferguson, Obama sympathized with the rioters.

Many of the Chicago protesters undoubtedly believed they were making Chicago a “safe space” by denying Trump his right to speak

Rather than condemning the violence, Obama said that institutionally racist police forces are prevalent throughout that country and require “collective action and mobilization.” And who could forget Baltimore mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake bragging about giving rioters who wished to destroy things “room to do so.”

At colleges across the country, coddled kids — pathologically incapable of coping with exposure to beliefs with which they disagree — routinely hound ideological opponents off of campus, believing this to be the correct way of responding to differing opinions.

Indeed, many of the Chicago protesters undoubtedly believed they were making Chicago a “safe space” by denying Trump his right to speak and his supporters’ right to hear him. The fact is that for years, liberals have used dishonest language designed to silence conservatives.

Hillary Clinton describes Republicans as enemies. The Democratic Party chairwoman, Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, says those who disapprove of abortion are guilty of waging a “war on women.” Christians who believe in traditional marriage are “bigots.” Conservatives who think one should provide a photo ID at the voting booth or want to see increased border security are “racist,” while those who question the extent to which human activity causes climate change are likened to Holocaust deniers.

“It is clear that Donald Trump is running a very cynical campaign pitting groups of Americans against one another. He is trafficking in hate and fear,” Hillary Clinton claimed at the Democratic town hall on Sunday night.

But trafficking in hate and fear and pitting one group of Americans against another are exactly what the Democratic party has been doing for decades. The bitter fruits of their favorite strategy were manifest in Chicago on Friday.
