On This Day… September 23, 1806

The Lewis and Clark Expedition returned to St. Louis, Missouri, after two-and-a-half years of exploration of the Louisiana Purchase — travel that totaled more than 7,000 miles. The men were accompanied by 28 men and one woman, Sacagawea, and made key U.S. claims to the Oregon territory.
