On This Day… Oct. 10, 1977

Columbus Day was celebrated under President Jimmy Carter — as well as many presidents before him, on the second Monday in October during their terms — after becoming a federal holiday in 1937. The holiday honors Columbus’ discovery of the New World, and celebrates Italian-American heritage for many.
