Sitting vice presidents rarely get to drive their own cars — and the rule generally applies for at least six months after they leave office as well.

But that didn’t stop President Obama’s number two from seeking special permission to get behind the wheel of a car for a preview of the upcoming season of “Jay Leno’s Garage.”

Joe Biden got the A-OK from the Secret Service to drive his 1967 Corvette, according to a piece in CNBC this weekend.

“I owe you big,” Joe Biden tells Leno during the show. Then he pulls “a massive burnout at a secure Washington D.C. training facility.”

“You realize this is only the third time I’ve gotten to drive this in seven years?” says Biden.

As CNBC went on to report, “The Corvette isn’t just any old muscle car. It holds a lot of sentimental value for all the Bidens. ‘My dad didn’t have a lot of money, but he ran the largest Chevrolet dealership in the state for years,’ Biden says during the program. The ’67 Corvette was his father’s wedding gift to him. That makes it worth much more to his family than its estimated value ($78,000, according to the show).”

The vice president’s sons had the car’s engine rebuilt for him as a Christmas gift years ago, CNBC also noted.

Says Biden during the Leno garage show preview, “It feels great! I’ve always loved to drive. I shouldn’t say it on [television] — I like speed.”
