Donald Trump had his hands full this past Monday debating Democrat Hillary Clinton and fending off moderator Lester Holt. Now it turns out he had a faulty microphone, as well.

Trump said immediately after the debate at Hofstra University that his microphone was not working properly, telling reporters that it was defective.

“Did you notice that? My mic was defective within the room.”

“Did you notice that? My mic was defective within the room,” he said. “No, but I wonder, was that on purpose? Was that on purpose? But I had a mic that wasn’t working properly.”

Trump repeated his complaint the next day.

“It was going on and off, and it was much lower than hers,” he said, according to CNN. “I don’t want to believe in conspiracy theories, of course, but it was much lower than hers and it was crackling and she didn’t have that problem.”

Trump’s complaints drew scorn from some in the media and from Clinton, who dismissed it as excuse-making by someone who had a bad performance. But the Commission on Presidential Debates confirmed the mechanical failure in a one-sentence statement on Friday.

“Regarding the first debate, there were issues regarding Donald Trump’s audio that affected the sound level in the debate hall,” the statement reads.

The commission offered no other explanation.

Trump referenced the commission’s admission during a speech in Michigan on Friday.

“Working that microphone was a hell of a lot more difficult than working Crooked Hillary Clinton, that I can tell you,” he said.

Trump suggested the malfunction might not have been accidental.

“It was difficult. And you know, when you have a situation like that, and you know it’s bad, and you think you have 100 million people watching, what do you do?” he said. “Stop the show? It was bad. I wonder why it was bad.”
