Incoming White House press secretary Sean Spicer suggested during an appearance on Fox News’ “Outnumbered” that the media should press Democrats point-blank on whether they would “denounce” the tactics and politics of protesters who interrupted Sen. Jeff Sessions’ Senate confirmation hearing Tuesday .

Sessions, during his confirmation hearing to become the U.S. attorney general, endured several exasperating interruptions. People dressed as Ku Klux Klan members were dragged outside the chamber and members of the liberal activist group Code Pink were also forcibly removed after their shouts and protests intermittently disrupted the hearing.

“I think the Democrats should be held accountable and should be asked, ‘Do you think this is appropriate, for left-wing groups to come in and interrupt a hearing?'”

“For the entire campaign … [the Trump campaign] would get peppered with questions. ‘So and so supports Donald Trump. Are you going to denounce them?'” Spicer said. “And they said, ‘Does Donald Trump denounce this person?’ I think the Democrats should be asked, ‘Are you going to denounce the tactics of Code Pink at a hearing like this?'”

“They need to be held accountable for the tactics on the Left the same way that we’re apparently held accountable for the tactics of people who have a right-leaning thought,” Spicer said.

The protesters shouted such things as, “No Trump, no KKK. No fascist USA” and “His voting record is evil.” Some held signs saying, “Support civil rights, stop Sessions.”

When South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham was in the middle of questioning Sessions about his views on maintaining the Guantanamo Bay detention camp, several protesters created a disruption before being dragged out of the room.

“I just wanted to see if they were still listening,” Graham quipped. “I think they’re on the fence about Gitmo, but I’m not sure.”

And when Graham questioned how Sessions would respond to those who label him as a “racist” and a “bigot,” another disturbance erupted. Those protesters were swiftly removed from the premises as well.

“If nothing else, I’m clearing the room for ya,” Graham told Sessions. “And I would suggest if the ‘freedom of speech’ also has some courtesy to listen, what is your answer?”

The embarrassing and persistent attempts by liberal activists to stall Sessions’ confirmation stand in stark contrast to the largely civil, substantive hearings afforded to President Obama’s Cabinet nominees in 2009. Despite significant policy fears among Second Amendment advocates, voter integrity watchdogs, immigration enforcement advocates, and others, there were no calls for national protests or disruptions during Eric Holder’s confirmation for attorney general.

“I think the Democrats should be held accountable and should be asked, ‘Do you think this is appropriate, for left-wing groups to come in and interrupt a hearing?'” Spicer asked Tuesday.
