Hillary Clinton spoke on Wednesday at the annual conference of the National Action Network, an organization founded by the Rev. Al Sharpton. Why? As Obama’s presidency draws to a close, many African-Americans are wondering if their issues will matter to the next president — and Clinton is desperately courting their vote.

While she praised Obama’s efforts, she did take subtle shots at the president on the issue of race relations.

“Race still plays a significant role in determining who gets ahead in America and who gets left behind,” Clinton said. “There’s something wrong my friends when the median wealth for black families is a tiny fraction of the median wealth for white families. When African-Americans are still more likely to be denied a mortgage… Something’s wrong when gun violence is by far the leading cause of death for young black men, outstripping the next nine causes of death combined.”

She also took shots at GOP front-runner Donald Trump, tying him to KKK leader and white supremacist David Duke — and saying it took to long for Trump to distance himself from Duke.

“This is the same Donald Trump who led the insidious birther movement to delegitimize President Obama,” said Hillary.

This speech came after her husband’s uncomfortable encounter with “Black Lives Matter” protestors at one of her of campaign events. Bill Clinton was caught on camera shouting at protestors in a heated interaction. “You are defending the people who kill the lives you say matter,” Bill shouted. “You are defending the people who cause young people to go out and take guns.”

The former president as well as the Hillary Clinton campaign later walked back those comments.

Sharpton himself even called the Bill Clinton incident “inappropriate.”

The interaction undoubtedly hangs over her candidacy as she tries to court black voters.
