The Chicago Police Department is investigating the alleged gang rape of a 15-year-old girl streamed on Facebook Live that was viewed by approximately 40 people who failed to report it to the police, the department said Tuesday.

Deahvion Austin’s mother initially reported her missing Sunday before alerting authorities she saw screenshots of a Facebook Live video that appeared to show her daughter being sexually assaulted by five or six males. Austin’s mother told the police the girl’s uncle brought the video to her attention, and she showed the images to Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson Monday, according to the Associated Press.

“Here’s what’s even more disturbing, more than the fact that they did this, there were so many people that saw it and didn’t pick up the phone to dial 911.”

“The superintendent was visibly upset when he saw the pictures of the girl and was dismayed when he learned that people were watching the incident live and no one called police,” police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said, according to USA Today.

Roughly 40 individuals viewed the live video online without dialing 911 to report it — a fact that Johnson told WGN-TV he found to be particularly “disturbing.”

“Here’s what’s even more disturbing, more than the fact that they did this, there were so many people that saw it and didn’t pick up the phone to dial 911,” Johnson said. “That’s not right. It’s just not right.”

After the police department contacted Facebook about the video, the company reportedly removed it. Austin was found later on Tuesday walking several blocks away from her home.

“LOCATED: Deahvion Austin was found by 10th district officers. She is now at the Area with her mother & detectives are conducting interviews,” Guglielmi tweeted Tuesday.

In a previous tweet, Guglielmi stated outright that Austin “was sexually assaulted on Facebook.”

Reginald King, a relative of Austin’s, told ABC7 that Austin “was heinously raped, beaten and abused and assaulted on tape — on FB live. So whatever picture people want to paint of her — she was a chronic runaway or whatever — nobody deserves that. No human being deserves for that to happen to them.”

Austin’s mother indicated that she had run away on a previous occasion, although she was recovered later that same day.

This is the second incident in the past few months that the Chicago Police Department has investigated regarding Facebook Live videos. Four suspects were arrested in January after footage appeared to show them shouting anti-Trump epithets and racial slurs at a mentally disabled white man as they beat and tortured him.

The four individuals — Jordan Hill, 18; Tesfaye Cooper, 18; Brittany Covington, 18; and Tanishia Covington, 24 — were charged with battery and committing a hate crime.
