On the 240th birthday of the Marine Corps, we tip our hats to an American hero who stepped up out of bravery, decency and sheer chutzpah to foil a robbery — potentially saving lives.

Firefighter and former Marine Daniel Gaskey showed a would-be robber who was boss after the thief pushed Gaskey aside at the counter of the Midlothian, Texas, Exxon Oasis Food Store several months back.

The security footage showed Gaskey standing at the counter getting ready to pay when he was abruptly shoved aside by a white male wearing a black mask and a red and black jacket.

At first, Gaskey raised his hands in the air, looking as if he mistook the robber, identified by police as Dylan Bearden, for an impatient customer.

Bearden demanded money from the clerk as he showed a fixed-blade knife. The security video shows Gaskey reacting, jumping forward without hesitation, then pulling Bearden to the ground and relieving him of his weapon.

He held Bearden until police arrived.

Gaskey served in the Marines, and has been with the Mansfield, Texas, Fire Department for more than a year.

“Daniel Gaskey exhibited tremendous courage, acting selflessly as he tackled the would be robber,” Midlothian Police Chief Carl Smith told LifeZette. “I am extremely proud and thankful that Mr. Gaskey was successful in overpowering and holding the suspect until a Midlothian officer could arrive. He certainly represents the American spirit that enables our country to remain great.”

The lesson for any would-be criminals? Think twice. You never know who might be near you as you try to commit your crime. You’d just better hope it isn’t an American Marine.

Who do you think would win the Presidency?
