What is going on at Mar Vista High School in Imperial Beach, California? Two sexual predators, one a football coach and another an ROTC instructor, have been arrested in that San Diego County community — in the space of just four days.

Edward Aaron Mendoza, 27, who worked as a walk-on football coach last fall at Mar Vista, was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon at his current workplace, and charged with engaging in sex acts with a ninth-grade girl while employed at Mar Vista High School. He was booked on multiple child molestation counts and now sits in a county jail, his bail set at $825,000.

Police in the seaside community have been busy. On Saturday, detectives arrested Mar Vista ROTC instructor Martin Albert Gallegos, 48, for having sex with a twelfth-grade female Mar Vista student on multiple occasions. He was booked on five counts of sexual misconduct with a minor, according to nbcnewsandiego.com. He has already been set free on bail.

A Facebook account entitled “IB (Imperial Beach) Crime Report” popped an angry green emoji face on their page with the text, “Feeling Sick at Mar Vista High School.” Their accompanying post was short and angry: “Another creep at MVHS.” LifeZette has reached out to this group, as well as Mar Vista High School, and has not yet heard back.

The sexual molestation was not a one-time occurrence. “Detectives discovered Mendoza had fostered an ongoing relationship with the victim and engaged in sexual activity with her at school over a period of about six months,” the police department said in a statement about Mendoza’s arrest.

The relationship surfaced when the victim’s father learned his daughter was talking to Mendoza on the phone for long periods of time and that there was an inappropriate relationship, reports the NBC affiliate in San Diego.

Were these two sexual predators in the U.S. legally? Did they have proper documentation?

Imperial Beach is part of the San Diego-Tijuana metropolitan area, the largest bi-national metropolitan area shared between the United States and Mexico in the country. Its population is over 5 million people.

Were these two sexual predators in the U.S. legally — or had they taken advantage of the unique blending of two nations at Imperial Beach and obtained positions of trust and leadership at Mar Vista without proper documentation? More information will no doubt be forthcoming.

For now, the sunny West Coast community is still reeling over the sad reality of adult predators in positions of leadership preying on young people.

Sharing the Mar Vista Facebook page with happy posts like “Proud mom moment, my son placed 2nd and 3rd in Swim against Hilltop, so proud of you Marcos Ballesteros” by Mar Vista mom Clara Web is this sobering comment by another: “When you work for the school district, you have to have fingerprints checked by the feds and state. I wonder how this and the other creep got on board.”

Jose N. Jasmine Barrios posted on April 9th on the Mar Vista High School Facebook page: “Praising God and receiving His great blessing today at my alma mater. God has the power to change, our schools, our families and our society with his LOVE,” after attending a retreat at the school — the same day ROTC instructor Gallegos was arrested.
