On This Day… Nov. 2, 1947

The Hughes Flying Boat, the largest aircraft ever built, took its first and only flight, piloted by designer Howard Hughes, a successful Hollywood movie producer. The “Spruce Goose” — named for the use of birch and spruce — was intended for WWII efforts, but never went into production.
