On This Day… September 13, 1814

Francis Scott Key wrote the poem “Defence of Fort McHenry,” whose lyrics became America’s National Anthem in 1931. The flag that inspired Key’s poem is now located at the Smithsonian’s Museum of American History in Washington, D.C.
