On This Day… August 12, 1938

Adolf Hitler instituted the Mother's Cross in honor of his mother, Klara, to be awarded every year on her birthday. In an effort to increase the population, he awarded gold, silver, and bronze medals to mothers with five or more children —​ while also providing training programs on how to be an ideal mother.
