Colin Kaepernick has been named GQ’s 2017 “Citizen of the Year,” the magazine announced Monday.

In 2016, Kaepernick was the first NFL player to kneel during the national anthem before football games, in protest of police brutality and racial injustice.

GQ claims it was this act that “cost him his job” — although many may argue it is because he is not an elite quarterback. The magazine also says the take a knee movement “transformed Colin Kaepernick into a lightning rod and a powerful symbol of activism and resistance.”

In October, the former football player filed a grievance for collusion against NFL owners, claiming they were plotting to keep him out of the league because of his protests.
