In an amazing feat, Colombian doctors successfully surgically removed a live grenade from the cheek of a Colombian soldier in just minutes, The Daily Caller reported.

Colombian Private Leandro José Luna, 20, got the injury when another soldier misfired a grenade launcher. Luna had to be transported to the hospital in an eight-hour car ride because the military deemed it too dangerous to transport him by helicopter. They feared the grenade would explode in the middle of a helicopter ride, according to The Daily Caller.

Once at the hospital, doctors explained that Luna’s surgery had to be done immediately and they set up a makeshift operating room in the hospital’s parking lot. Doctor William Sánchez, the hospital’s chief of surgery, told Colombian daily El Tiempo that “security protocols were implemented; including getting people to back up over 10 yards away” from the patient.

Immediately after the grenade was removed, it was “handed over to an anti-explosives agent who received it in his helmet and immediately left the area. A few minutes later, an explosion was heard,” Noticias RCN reported.

Sánchez says Luna is no longer in intensive care and believes that “the (facial) reconstruction will be perfect,” The Daily Caller reported.
