Georgia police are conducting a manhunt for a suspect who fatally shot a patrolman early Sunday.

Officer Tim Smith, 31, was killed after confronting the suspect, who police are identifying as Royheem Delshawn Deeds, 24.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says Deeds is armed and dangerous.

The incident occurred late Saturday, after Dodge County 911 received a call about a suspicious person (now thought to be Deeds) downtown. Officer Smith responded to the call, exited his car to investigate, and was shot. He was rushed to the hospital and passed away Sunday morning, according to USA Today.

“Bureau Special Agent in Charge Scott Whitley told WMAZ-TV that Smith had a conversation with the alleged gunman while standing outside of his patrol vehicle. Whitley said Smith, who was not wearing a body camera, called in the shooting,” reports USA Today.

The bureau has recruited an extra 20 people from local agencies to help find the suspect.

Tim Smith was a father of three, and had been an officer with the Eastman Police Department for over five years.
