We’ve heard it all before: Work has been denied to actors, directors, screenwriters, musicians and anyone else in the entertainment industry who’s been accused of holding certain political beliefs that aren’t in the mainstream.

We aren’t talking about 1950s McCarthyism (named, of course, after the late Sen. Joseph McCarthy, who led the effort to blacklist suspected Communist artists from work in Hollywood). We’re talking about today, now — this very moment in time, that those who support or have any affiliation whatsoever with President Donald Trump can lose a career, a job, a gig. Or have it threatened.

Welcome to reverse McCarthyism, 2017. Many celebrities have been ridiculed and vilified since the election of Trump, whether they openly supported his candidacy and presidency or simply made politically middle-of-the-road comments.

During President Trump’s January inauguration, we first saw this reverse McCarthyism. The mainstream media didn’t give a second thought to Katy Perry, Beyoncé, Jay Z, Madonna, John Legend, or countless other liberal celebrities who lined up for PSAs that pushed Hillary Clinton for president. Yet when a celebrity was asked to perform at Trump’s inauguration or even floated the idea of doing so, bullying and backlash followed.

Opera singer Andrea Bocelli received major criticism and threats of boycotts when he was rumored to be playing at the inauguration (he wound up not participating); and the B-Street Band — which covers Bruce Springsteen hits — backed out of a contracted appearance at one of the presidential galas due to backlash.

But reverse McCarthyism doesn’t stop there. Comedian Steve Harvey was called a racist and other impolite terms by many fellow celebrities and keyboard-warrior liberals this year after he met with, and was seen with, the president at Trump Tower. Oscar winner Nicole Kidman was compared to a plastic “puppet” by “Avengers” director and self-proclaimed feminist Joss Whedon when she merely mentioned to the BBC that the country “support whoever’s the president because that’s what the country’s based on.”

Singer Aaron Carter tweeted a few pro-Trump thoughts and received death threats. He tweeted later he was “so bullied” that that he did not want to cast a vote at all in the election.

Actor Antonio Sabato, Jr. was blacklisted in Hollywood after he endorsed Trump for president. He told Variety, “I’ve had fantastic directors who have said officially to my agents and managers they will never hire me again. They will never even see me for projects. That’s unfair. It’s just like communism.”

Actress and former Fox News Channel contributor Stacey Dash has also claimed on multiple occasions that her acting opportunities have ceased because of her political beliefs.

Now “American Psycho” author Bret Easton Ellis (pictured at the top of this article) is the latest celebrity to be vilified when it comes to politics and Trump. The crazy thing is, he’s not even a supporter of the president.

Ellis revealed in a series of recent tweets he was labeled a “Trump apologist” and accused of “colluding with Russia” by an individual at the Sunset Tower Hotel in Los Angeles over the weekend — all because he defended Trump voters over dinner. Easton tweeted that political conversations were “ruining” his dinner, then questioned whether the Left had gone “nuts.”

In an email sent to Breitbart News explaining the actions of a troublesome dinner guest, Ellis described how he was scorned and yelled at for saying bad things about MSNBC and Hollywood liberals. He also admitted he was disinterested in politics and was not a supporter of any ideological side.

“As for whoever’s in the White House — they got voted in, what can you do? What I’m critiquing has nothing to do with Left-Right, liberal-conservative — I don’t believe in those labels,” he wrote.

The bullying of individuals in Hollywood who won’t trash Trump completely is just more proof that many prominent artists and pop culture influencers are feeding into an unhealthy divide in this country. People should be able to have middle-of-the-road opinions or, at the very least, share views that aren’t far left — without being bullied and labeled. Alas, this is not the way way things are going right now.
