The popular sitcom “Roseanne,” which is in the process of returning to television, is already facing controversy. That’s because a report from Showbiz411 revealed the show is seeking to cast a “gender-creative” child actor to play the grandson of the character played by actress and comedian Roseanne Barr.

A source told the site the casting call is seeking a “sensitive and effeminate” child actor who “displays qualities of both young female and male traits.”

Considering that gender is so hotly debated today, some people are going so far as to call for a boycott of the show — which will have an eight-episode run early next year.

Roseanne Barr, 64, has been mostly quiet about the social media complaints. “VERY INTERESTING TOPICS TO READ ON TWITTER TODAY!” she wrote Monday when the news first broke.

She also responded to one person directly in a tweet — which now appears to be deleted. She told the protester the storyline would not be what people think.

Barr has never been one to toe the accepted political line in Hollywood. She has been an outspoken supporter of President Donald Trump and a fierce critic against radical Islam.

The original “Roseanne” was known for tackling serious issues, but typically not in ways that aggressively pushed a specific message, as so much of Hollywood’s content does today. The reboot is shaping up to be exactly what the original series was — a comedic and realistic look at reality the way it is, not the way some people want it to be.

Barr has explained recently her goal of using “Roseanne” to highlight the struggles of the modern-day blue-collar family in middle America, something largely ignored on television in 2017. She’s been using social media during the past few months to gather feedback from followers about people’s daily lives and the hardships they face.

For those ready to grab their pitchforks and protest the reboot of “Roseanne” — Barr deserves the benefit of the doubt. The show is still a long way off, and Barr has proven time and again in the last few years that she is an independent thinker with no interest in joining the groupthink ranks of Hollywood.

No matter what all the chatter out there may indicate or suggest, Barr is talented and smart enough to remain independent of other people’s agendas — especially Hollywood liberals. The original run of her sitcom from 1988 to 1997 proved that in spades.
