Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump will not be receiving the “Star Trek” vote. A new group, Trek Against Trump, which boasts members of all “Star Trek” generations including Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, and George Takei, has been formed to help Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

The group released a letter, endorsed by 110 cast and crew members from the long-running franchise, supporting Hillary Clinton and making it very clear how they feel about Trump.

Two major “Star Trek” players notably missing: William Shatner and Patrick Stewart.

“We cannot turn our backs on what is happening in the upcoming election. Never has there been a presidential candidate who stands in such complete opposition to the ideals of the ‘Star Trek’ universe as Donald Trump.”

With lines like that last one, they might as well be campaigning for the real estate mogul rather than against him.

Other signers endorsing the long letter were Bryan Fuller (creator of the upcoming “Star Trek: Discovery”) and the families of the late Leonard Nimoy and original creator Gene Roddenberry. Two major “Star Trek” players notably missing from the long list of celebs are original “Star Trek” actor William Shatner and “Star Trek: The Next Generation” lead Patrick Stewart.

Celebrity gimmicks like Trek Against Trump worked back in 2008 when then-Senator Barack Obama was the wunderkind of the Democratic Party. They have done little to boost current nominee Hillary Clinton.

There’s a valid reason celebrity support means absolutely nothing in this election. It worked for Obama because, at the time, he was the outsider running against the Washington machine. Though his many promises of change turned out to be as empty as most from the mouths of politicians, he still managed to excite people by being new. It made sense for celebs and artists to promote the young candidate.

This time, Democrats have chosen to nominate a Washington insider, someone with decades of corruption and scandal behind her. The gimmicks don’t work. Now, Republicans have the outsider and it’s making Hollywood stars look foolish as they do their best to stand by the very corrupt authority art is supposed to keep in check, satirize, and rebel against.

It’s so hard to make an argument for why Hillary Clinton should be president that groups like Trek Against Trump have taken their support a step further than before. Not only is the group demonizing Trump and his supporters, but they make it clear in their letter that absolutely anyone who chooses to support any candidate except Crooked Hillary is “illogical.”

“We have heard people say they will vote Green or Libertarian or not at all because the two major candidates are equally flawed. That is both illogical and inaccurate,” the letter reads.

Someone needs to send the “Star Trek” crew a dictionary with the word “elitism” highlighted.

How very appalling for these celebrities, these artists, to not only shame those voting for the opposite party candidate, but to also shame anyone who chooses not to vote for Hillary Clinton.

In a letter that finishes its statement by urging people to register to vote, they say people are “illogical” not just for supporting Trump, but for not casting a vote for the one corrupt candidate they have blindly chosen as their leader.

It’s not 2008. Hillary Clinton is not a young and untested Barack Obama. These two facts mean the only strategy Hollywood celebrities have left for supporting their candidate is by angrily shaming anyone who dares to look elsewhere for politicians who have not skirted treason charges or been arguably responsible for American deaths, only to balk at the notion of responsibility later.

In the public letter, the Trekkies say Clinton “has devoted her life to public service, and has deep and valuable experience with the proven ability to work with Congress to pass desperately needed legislation.” If that were true, Trump would not be polling so well with independents. If that were true, millennial voters would not be running from Clinton in favor of third-party candidates.

Hollywood and its occupants have every right to express their views on politics. They are often wrong and hypocritical in their thinking, but they still have the right to express their opinion on their very public stage.

And we have a right to say, “Beam them up, Scotty.”
