Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has met his day of reckoning.

The once-powerful film figure was charged by the New York Police Department’s Special Victims Unit and the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office on Friday.

The charges include sexual assault, sexual misconduct, and rape allegedly committed against two different women who were not publicly named. Weinstein maintains his innocence.

The movie mogul surrendered to authorities and was taken into custody. Instead of a demeanor of regret, though, Weinstein faced the public with a smug smile.

After his decades in the film industry and after numerous horror stories emerged from female associates, one can only imagine that this is a provocation for Weinstein accusers.

“Today Harvey Weinstein will take his first step on his inevitable descent to hell. We, the women, finally have real hope for justice,” Italian actress and Weinstein accuser Asia Argento wrote on Twitter.

Rose McGowan, one of Weinstein’s most vocal accusers, appeared on “Good Morning America” Friday and discussed her “visceral need” to see the producer in handcuffs.

“I feel shocked. I would say it’s just so big,” she said. “I have to admit I didn’t think I would see the day that he would have handcuffs on him. I have a visceral need for him to have handcuffs on.”

One of the recurring themes of the revolting Weinstein story is that much of Hollywood knew about his abhorrent behavior — yet stood idly by. It shouldn’t be lost on those watching today’s events and all that follows that the film industry is not being exonerated with any conviction. Nor are political supporters who were warned — such as former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

“This was a very systematic pattern of abuse.”

“This was a very systematic pattern of abuse, which was rarely considered a crime by a culture in the entertainment business that continually perpetuated it,” Weinstein accuser Dominique Huett told NBC News.

Weinstein posted a $10 million bond and is out of court pending indictment. He was ordered to surrender his passport and wear an ankle monitor, and he was restricted to travel in the states of New York and Connecticut.
