At Thursday’s National Prayer Breakfast, President Donald Trump joked about his replacement host on NBC’s reality competition series, “The Celebrity Apprentice.”

“They hired a big, big movie star, Arnold Schwarzenegger, to take my place, and we know how that turned out,” Trump said after being introduced by friend and “Apprentice” creator Mark Burnett. “The ratings went right down the tubes. It’s been a total disaster. And Mark will never, ever bet against Trump again, and I want to just pray for Arnold, if we can, for those ratings, OK?”

Schwarzenegger responded in a video posted to Twitter, and suggested the two men switch jobs.

Schwarzenegger responded in a video posted to Twitter, in which he suggested the two men switch jobs.

He suggested Trump take back hosting duties on “Apprentice” “because you’re such an expert in ratings” — while Schwarzenegger would become president so “people can finally sleep comfortably again.”

White House press secretary Sean Spicer called Trump’s dig at Schwarzenegger “lighthearted.” It wasn’t the first time Trump had poked fun at Schwarzenegger — and it certainly wasn’t the beginning of criticism from the ex-governor of California against the president.

Schwarzenegger previously endorsed John Kasich for the GOP presidential nomination and refused to support Donald Trump.

Trump didn’t let the feud with Schwarzenegger go when he tweeted Friday in response to the action star’s Twitter video: “Yes, Arnold Schwarzenegger did a really bad job as Governor of California and even worse on the Apprentice … but at least he tried hard!”

While it’s difficult to tell whether the two hosts of the “Apprentice” are trading insults in jest, what’s not hard to tell is the lower ratings on “Celebrity Apprentice.” Since Schwarzenegger took over the hosting duties, the reality series has made headlines for losing big chunks of viewers.

Schwarzenegger’s “Apprentice” debuted to 4.9 million viewers in January. Its opening numbers were down a whopping 35 percent since the premiere of the previous season, hosted by Donald Trump. The season has since dropped even further in the ratings. The last season of Trump’s “Apprentice” was typically pulling in 2 or 3 million more viewers than the latest incarnation.

“People watch a show because of what’s on the show. And Trump — regardless of how you feel about him — tends to boost the ratings of everything he’s on,” wrote Entertainment Weekly’s James Hibberd about the show’s declining ratings.

Schwarzenegger was an odd pick for the series anyway. His business acumen comes mainly from branding his own movie star image. Though he seems to have found his footing and is fun enough on the series, a more fitting replacement would have been another charismatic entrepreneur such as Kevin O’Leary, Richard Branson, or Mark Cuban.

Still, the small tiffs between Trump and Schwarzenegger seem to be in good fun. Trump still retains an executive producer credit on his old show and current producer Mark Burnett is described as a “special friend.”

However, whether it’s all in good fun in the end or a serious feud between two celebrity Republicans, Trump has one cold hard truth on his side: Those ratings stink.
