President Trump’s 2020 competition may end up being former wrestler turned movie star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
The 45-year-old actor has talked up a presidential run on many occasions in recent months, though he’s always kept his politics close to his chest and has spoken in very general terms about a political future.
Someone is taking the man seriously, though. A organization called “Run the Rock 2020” was officially registered with the Federal Election Commission on July 9, according to the FEC’s official website.

The group was registered by a West Virginia man named Kenton Tilford. Johnson has had nothing to say on the matter thus far, but his past comments on his desire to run for president at some point in the future are well-noted.
“A year ago, it started coming up more and more,” the actor told the GQ in May. “There was a real sense of earnestness, which made me go home and think, ‘Let me really rethink my answer and make sure I am giving an answer that is truthful and also respectful.'”
He’s said similar things in other recent interviews. Despite expressing a desire to jump into the political ring, not many are aware of Johnson’s politics. He has attended both the Republican and Democratic National Conventions in the past (as part of a WWE move to encourage people to vote), and he is reportedly registered as an Independent.
The “Baywatch” actor has had little to say on the current president, but what he has said has not exactly been an endorsement.
He told GQ that he disagreed with the president’s travel ban. “I believe in inclusion. Our country was built on that, and it continues to be made strong by that. And the decision felt like a snap judgment. I feel like the majority of, if not all, Americans feel that protection is of huge importance,” he said.
He also said on “Good Morning America” and to film critic Kevin McCarthy on a recent red carpet that people wanting him to run is a sign that they are “wanting to see a better leadership happening right now.”

It’s difficult to tell how serious Johnson actually is about throwing his hat into the political ring, but this newly formed committee proves others are certainly taking him seriously enough.
With a stacked future in film that includes a role in the DC comic book universe and roles in major releases such as “Rampage” and a “Jumanji” reboot, it’s tough to believe he’d walk away from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood — but it’s happened before. Arnold Schwarzenegger walked away from an A-list career to be governor of California; other celebs, such as Al Franken and Jesse Ventura, have run for office and won.

Running for president, though, without even commenting seriously on current affairs, seems a bit strange. Still, Democrats are no doubt looking for someone different from their usual crop for 2020 after the Hillary Clinton debacle. Johnson’s even already earned his first endorsement. Filmmaker and Trump troll Michael Moore told Variety this year he’d like to see the action star run for president.
“It would scare anybody that would hurt us,” he said. Johnson may want to think about picking up some better endorsements if he seriously does want to run.
