What would Stephen Colbert do without President Donald Trump?

The liberal comedian would certainly struggle to find material for his late-night program.

His show seems entirely centered around anything and everything the president does and says.

On his latest program, Colbert targeted French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent visit to the White House.

After showing a video of Macron railing against “nationalism” and “isolationism” — which Colbert equated to an insult to Trump’s “America First” policy — Colbert said, “Oooh! Does that sting, Donald? Somebody call a French ambulance to take you to ‘le burn ward’!”

He continued, “And you know how Macron’s BFF, Trump, has repeatedly said that global warming is a fraud? Well, you know what’s the real fraud? Their friendship.”

Is this really what late-night comedy has fallen to in 2018? That’s it? A bunch of cheap shots at the president of the United States for a few laughs from the usual audience?

Maybe Colbert needs a week off to unplug from the news, calm down his Trump hysteria — and really reflect on how to say something original beyond childish and hollow insults about the president.
