‘SNL’ Uses Mother’s Day to Attack Donald Trump (You Expected Better?)

Could “Saturday Night Live” ever pull off a full episode without going after the current president?

This time around, in a show hosted by Amy Schumer, it seemed the idea was to honor the cast’s mothers in the opening segment; yet politics intruded pretty quickly. Cast member Luke Nell’s mother eventually chimed in with, “Enough with the Trump jokes!” and “Why doesn’t ‘SNL’ talk about crooked Hillary?”

Fellow cast member Chris Redd’s mother expressed a similar concern: “I don’t understand why everyone focuses on Trump when you should be focusing on Jesus.”

In response, Redd said, “Well, Jesus isn’t president, Ma.”

She quipped in return, “And that’s the problem.”

During the segment, another mother also called the special counsel’s investigation against Trump a “witch hunt.” Finally, the mother of “Weekend Update” co-host Colin Jost made an appearance.

Jost asked her, “Mom, you like the politics on the show, right?”

She replied, “I think Alec Baldwin does a great Trump impression. But why does it have to be so mean? Who writes that stuff?”

Jost shrugged. “Yeah, I don’t know. I guess it’s mostly Michael Che.” (Both “Weekend Update” co-hosts are actually writers on the show.)

Still, none of this was as over-the-top as the previous week’s show, in which “SNL” brought on adult actress Stormy Daniels for a cameo.

The “Weekend Update” segment started off with an attack against Melania Trump, of all people.

Earlier in the week, the first lady announced her “Be Best” campaign, which focuses on combating cyberbullying and opioid addiction. Michael Che called her a “sexy-a** Michael Jackson” and said, “‘Be Best’ — as in, it would ‘be best’ if you got a divorce.”

If that weren’t enough, Che also went after the president for all he did to free three Americans who had been held captive in North Korea.

“Personally, I don’t like when Trump is this quiet. It’s like when I’m babysitting my nephew and he’s quiet for too long and I’m like, ‘Oh, no, he’s eating out of that litter box again.'”

What really stood out, though, was this from Jost: “You know, I gotta admit, President Trump had a pretty good week. He helped secure the release of three American prisoners from North Korea, and when he greeted them at the airport, he didn’t even say, ‘Wait, I thought they were Americans.'”
