The latest video game consoles represent terrific advancements in graphics and horsepower, while also becoming entertainment centers for the masses.

Still, some great game franchises reside on older systems. Fans want to save shelf space, so they’ve tucked the consoles of old into closets and, unfortunately, these franchises have gone with them.

Remastered editions of games have been a hot seller as well as a point of contention for some. Is simply porting a game over to a new console without any upgrades a cash grab?

Either way, some franchises will get significant upgrades thanks to new technology. “Gears of War: Ultimate Edition,” available Aug. 25, is one game whose upgrades are vividly apparent in side-by-side tests. Microsoft labels this “The First at Its Best,” touting the rebuilt experience in 1080p high definition.

The game has been recreated from top to bottom, including lighting, environments, characters and cinematic scenes. Not only that, it is also bringing the entire franchise to the Xbox One via backwards compatibility.

What about other franchises that deserve this level of detail in jumping to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One? Gamers tend to fall in love with an IP and will want to see it reborn wherever they go. Here are a few that folks are clamoring to see.

Assassin’s Creed: The Ubisoft franchise has been a dominant force since it debuted in 2007, enjoying success across multiple titles and multiple consoles. While the most recent installments of the game have been part of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One families, the first five main installments of the franchise live and breathe solely on their elder counterparts. With the release of “Assassin’s Creed Syndicate” approaching this fall, the passionate fan base will get its Assassin’s Creed fix for 2015. Bringing remastered versions of Ezio and company to the latest generation of consoles would be a welcome sight for 2016.

Call of Duty: The Modern Warfare Series: When it comes to online multiplayer, this series changed the game. The original, “Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare,” had one of the best campaigns seen in the first-person shooter genre and was the catalyst for the success “Call of Duty” continues to enjoy today. The saga of Captain Price and Soap Mactavish is revered for its rugged style and ability to always “one-up” itself, and it set a standard that other developers both within the “Call of Duty” ecosystem and outside it try to emulate. While “Call of Duty: Black Ops 2″ leads the way in Microsoft’s voting for backwards compatibility, the “Modern Warfare” trilogy would be a huge hit in the remastered arena.

Mass Effect: Microsoft kicked off its backwards compatibility announcement with “Mass Effect,” while the sequel and third installment of the trilogy are available on Sony’s PlayStation Now service. It’s high time that the trilogy is put back together and remastered for a new generation. The exploits of Commander Shepard created a large, passionate fan base that was not shy about expressing its opinions about each title, so much so that modified endings of the third title had to be created because of an outcry over the original endings. That passion extends to making a Mass Effect trilogy remaster, with fans regularly reaching out to Bioware. It has stated the idea is not off the table.

Rockstar Games: Fans have begged for remasters on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 for virtually all of Rockstar Games’ catalog. While the flagship title, “Grand Theft Auto,” has embraced the latest generation of consoles, the earlier installments, including the legendary “Grand Theft Auto 3,” “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas” and “Grand Theft Auto IV,” would fit well in this new breed of system. Additionally, the number-one game fans have asked for on backwards compatibility is “Red Dead Redemption,” so remaster would score big with fans. Throwing in the underrated “L.A. Noire” would add to the fun.

Fallout: Bethesda had one of the best E3s in recent years with the unveiling of “Fallout 4” serving as the centerpiece of their showcase. There’s no doubt that Bethesda is going to have a firm grasp on the holiday season and beyond with “Fallout 4” and, judging by the pieces we’ve seen, for good reason. While fans are more than eager to get their hands on “Fallout 4,” previous titles such as “Fallout 3” and “Fallout: New Vegas” rank high on the list of games we’d like to see remastered for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. With the recent announcement that “Fallout 4″ will have no level cap and will not end directly after the story finishes, Bethesda could make these remasters happen over the next five years and it would unquestionably quench the fans’ thirst.
