Susan Sarandon is one of the more politically outspoken performers in Hollywood. She was adamant about her support for Green Party candidate Jill Stein during the 2016 presidential race, and she’s been arrested multiple times for protesting — mostly with environmental groups.

Whether it’s actually cost her any work is up for debate — but it’s a debate Sarandon won’t take part in because she doesn’t care. “I feel like that’s kind of like worrying if your slip is showing when you’re fleeing a burning building,” the Academy Award-winning 70-year-old actress told Jimmy Fallon, this week on his late-night show, about the notion of losing work because of her political positions.

“I’m gonna be a woman much longer than I’m going to be an actor,” she explained. “I’m gonna be a mother much longer than I’ll be an actor.”

The actress also shared her two cents about President Trump, the events of Charlottesville, and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. “I was reading that the most endangered demographic … whose lifespan has been decreasing as other people’s lifespans have been increasing, are white men,” said Sarandon. “So how frustrated are they? … Now we have a reality-show star as a president? Come on. And we have two of the worst actors. One is president and one [was] governor of California. What is it, only good actors aren’t supposed to have anything?”

Referencing the recent events in Charlottesville, she said Americans need to acknowledge systematic racism. “I think we have to admit that this is a systemic problem. This country was founded on a genocide of Native Americans and on the backs of slaves, and I don’t think we’ve ever really dealt with that … I think that the way you deal with it is to do as much as you can.”

While Sarandon’s views do not always align with the majority of those in Hollywood — many of whom stumped for Hillary Clinton last year and couldn’t bring themselves to ever criticize Barack Obama — it’s unlikely she has lost work because of it. If she has, it’s easy for her to say she doesn’t care, as she’s far more than established on screen and likely secure enough financially to never need another role.

Reports out of Hollywood have suggested it’s much more difficult for people to be open about their political views if those views in any way align with the right wing or conservative thoughts.

One actor admitted shock at finding out a casting director pored through actors’ social media accounts to find out their political views — and then discarded those who appeared to vote a certain way. “Hercules” star Kevin Sorbo compared being a Christian conservative in Hollywood to a career “death sentence.” “Die Hard” actor Robert Davi said he was sure he lost a recent gig due to his outspoken support of the president. Director Spike Lee even openly admitted dropping a singer’s song from a soundtrack, all because she agreed to play at the presidential inauguration of Donald Trump. On and on it goes.

In Hollywood, there’s clearly a danger of losing work if you don’t toe the left-wing political line.

As for Sarandon? She’s fresh off a voice role on the highly rated “Rick and Morty,” she’d had a leading role on the critically acclaimed FX series “Feud,” and she’s currently appearing on the fifth season of Showtime’s hit show “Ray Donovan.”
