There were exactly zero political speeches at the 2017 Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas on Sunday night. It’s odd when that is something an award ceremony should be applauded for — but that’s the world we live in today.

After increasingly divisive Golden Globe and Oscar ceremonies, in which artists seemed more interested in attending a political protest than talking about movies, the ACM Awards skirted politics entirely and kept the night’s focus all on country music.

There seemed to be more music performed onstage, in fact, than people talking into microphones. In other words, it was a successful and crowd-pleasing night that featured country’s biggest names, including performances by some of country’s hottest acts, such as Carrie Underwood, Little Big Town, Maren Morris, and Keith Urban.

In an interview with The Associated Press leading up to the show, co-host and singer Luke Bryan joked, “Democrats and Republicans are going to get along on Sunday night. They’re all going to watch the ACMs together and stuff’s going to start happening in this country. It’s going to change.”

He added with a laugh, “Cats and dogs are going to make out.” The night kept the same lighthearted tone. as Bryan and co-host Dierks Bentley poked fun at each other onstage. The ceremony was full of great country music performances, including a duet from Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, which kept the show’s focus right where it needed to be.

The average viewer in America doesn’t tune into an entertainment awards ceremony to hear political preaching. It’s not the point of the night, nor should it be. People tune in to hear great music, to celebrate art, and to applaud the individuals who excel in their fields.

The Golden Globes, the Academy Awards, and others should have been taking notes on the apolitical, fun, and celebratory ACM Awards.
