The cultural phenomenon of the celebrity wedding crash is a strange but thriving one. Even President Barack Obama has managed to crash a few weddings, whether with his presence or his clout.

Sometimes Justin Bieber rushing the dance floor at your wedding isn’t needed.

It’s a cute and splashy trick — one that most likely puts some couples in enough awe at the surprise of an uninvited celebrity guest to warrant the entire ordeal. On the other hand, who wants the special day ruined by the ego of a public figure hogging all the attention?

Obama was using one of his many self-imposed vacation days last fall to play golf in sunny California when his 18 holes put a kink in the plans of a bride and groom who were counting on using the same area to wed.

After waiting patiently for the president to finish his game, the photographers and couple decided to head out to the field and nab a picture with the president. To his credit, Obama took photos with the couple, and everyone seemed to see the schedules clashing as a blessing in disguise.

“It was a life moment that none of us will ever forget,” Erin Youngren, one of the wedding photographers, said of the day in her blog.

It’s not the first time the president’s golf game has interrupted a wedding. Another couple from 2014 had to relocate their ceremony when the President decided to play golf in the designated area instead. The couple later earned a phone call from the president and an apology, according to CNN.

Not all wedding crashes are because of a golf game. Taylor Swift recently showed up unexpectedly at a fan’s wedding after receiving an invitation. The letter was from the groom’s sister and told the story of how the groom and his ailing mother had their special dance to one of Swift’s songs in the hospital room after seeing her son married there in a special service.

Swift arrived, surprising all attendees, performed a song, and even brought a handmade gift for the newlyweds.

Like the 2005 movie, “Wedding Crashers,” in which Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson regularly crashed weddings to find dates and take advantage of free food and drink, the concept of crashing has almost become a new sport with celebs.

Power couple Jay-Z and Beyonce were touring Italy when they walked into a church and accidentally crashed a wedding that was underway. Justin Bieber invited himself into a ceremony after walking along a beach and hearing “One Less Lonely Girl” playing from inside of the building holding the event. The musician entered, uninvited, and performed for everyone, saying, “We heard a party so we decided to just come. So let’s party!”

Lady Gaga bought everyone a round of drinks at a wedding while visiting Australia in 2012. After surprising guests and joining in on the celebration, she even offered some blunt advice to the special couple: “Have good sex!” Other celebrity wedding crashers include Serena Williams and John Travolta.

Adam Levine, lead singer of Maroon 5, decided to record it all when he and his bandmates crashed various weddings in California for their popular 2015 “Sugar” music video. Getting all the reactions on tape, he performed at each wedding. It’s been viewed more than 1 billion times.

While most couples seem more than ecstatic to have their favorite celebrities “crash” their weddings, whether on purpose or not, it still speaks to a strange entitlement that may take away from someone’s special day. A public figure usually earns all the attention in the room, and a wedding is supposed to be about the bride and groom.

“I think it would depend on if the celebrity was someone who they enjoyed and how it was crashed,” wedding photographer Laura Elaine Snell tells Lifezette about celebrity wedding crashers. She says she’s seen plenty of weddings ruined by uninvited guests or surprise visitors.

“There’s also the brides that want everything [to be] about them and I’m sure a celebrity would take the spotlight off,” says Snell.

Celebrities, however, seem to exist in their own world. Sometimes Justin Bieber rushing the dance floor at your wedding isn’t exactly the sort of memory the bride and groom may want, considering what’s really being celebrated. But it’s certainly a photo for the wedding album.
