Late-night comedian Jimmy Kimmel’s recent joke about the first lady’s accent is not going over well with many Americans.

A petition calling for a boycott of Kimmel now has more than 180,000 signatures as of this writing, and those behind the petition say they intend to send the signatures straight to ABC, the network that airs Kimmel’s television show.

“We may not get him kicked off the air,” reads the petition’s website. “But we can send a message that these attacks on our first lady will NOT be tolerated!”

Kimmel mocked Melania Trump’s accent after he showed a video of the first lady reading to children at the recent White House Easter Egg Roll event.

“Dees and dat,” Kimmel joked, mocking Trump’s pronunciation of “this or that.”

Melania Trump is originally from Novo Mesto, Slovenia, but she is a legal citizen of the United States.

She speaks five languages.

If Kimmel’s sad and pandering performance at the Oscars not long ago told us anything, it’s that he’s desperate to be a darling among liberals and a champion of social justice. He’s going to have a tough time doing the latter if his humor is continually mean-spirited.

He shouldn’t get a pass just because he touts liberal ideology. If a conservative comedian mocked a liberal’s accent, that person would be slammed by the mainstream media.

It’s up to the public to point out the hypocrisy here.

But the media won’t go after someone like Kimmel. That’s why it’s up to the public to point out the hypocrisy — and that growing petition shows that the public has spoken and made its stance on Kimmel’s humor, especially toward the first lady, well known.
