Moby — yes, Moby the musician — has claimed through Instagram to have “100 percent real” proof of the Trump administration’s ties to Russia. It should go without saying that this individual has provided no such actual proof — so we just “have to take him” at his word.

“After spending the weekend talking to friends who work in dc [sic] i can safely (well, ‘accurately’…) post the following things: 1-the russian dossier on trump is real. 100% real. he’s being blackmailed by the russian government, not just for being peed on by russian hookers, but for much more nefarious things,” wrote Moby.

The musician also claimed that intelligence agencies were working on the “impeachment” of President Donald Trump.

The recording artist continued, in his awkward and lowercased shorthand: “2-the trump administration is in collusion with the russian government, and has been since day one. 3-the trump administration needs a war, most likely with iran. at present they are putting u.s warships off the coast of iran in the hope that iran will attack one of the ships and give the u.s a pretense for invasion. 4-there are right wing plans to get rid of trump. he’s a drain on their fundraising and their approval ratings, and the gop and koch brothers and other u.s right wing groups are planning to get rid of trump.”

The musician also claimed that intelligence agencies were working on the “impeachment” of President Donald Trump. He finished off his bizarre comments with, “I’m writing these things so that when/if these things happen there will be a public record beforehand. these are truly baffling and horrifying times, as we have an incompetent president who is essentially owned by a foreign power.”

President Trump made clear at a Thursday press conference that rumors of the administration’s ties to Russia were baseless. “I own nothing in Russia. I have no loans in Russia. I don’t have any deals in Russia,” Trump told the American people directly.

Moby is not the only celebrity to use his public platform as a way to feed into conspiracy theories and fear-mongering. Actor Tom Arnold has gained press for months because he’s claimed to be in possession of tapes in which Donald Trump can be heard using racial slurs.

In a December interview with Dori Monson’s KIRO radio show, Arnold said, “I have the outtakes to ‘The Apprentice’ where he says every bad thing ever, every dirty, every offensive, racist thing ever.”

He added, “When the people sent it to me, it was funny. Hundreds of people have seen these. It was sort of a Christmas video they put together. He wasn’t going to be president of the United States. It was him sitting in that chair saying the n-word, saying the c-word … just being so mean to his own children.”

Arnold continued to tease the tapes through Twitter and interviews and even claimed on a recent episode of the Australian reality series “I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here!” that Hillary Clinton begged him to release the tapes before Election Day.

Arnold claimed Clinton told him, “The weight of the free world is on your shoulders.” Arnold said in the episode, according to The Daily Telegraph, that he didn’t release the tapes because he didn’t think they would have made a difference in the election.

Without providing any actual proof that they talk up to the press and public, all such celebrities as Moby and Tom Arnold are doing is shamefully catering to the lowest common denominator. They are waving the flag for fake news and conspiracy theories. They are fear-mongering — talking the talk without walking the walk. If they had real proof of anything, they’d have a responsibility to provide it to the public.

Spoiler alert: They likely don’t — and can only rely on wild and baseless accusations to criticize an administration they don’t like.
