Michael Moore is set to honor actress Jane Fonda with a lifetime achievement award at the 14th session of his Traverse City Film Festival, which begins on July 31.

“I can think of no other artist who has given more to her country,” said Moore in a statement announcing the award for Fonda. “What an honor for our festival audience to welcome and to be inspired by the work of this American icon. Her voice is as needed today as much as ever.”

The ultra-liberal Jane Fonda is known less for her acting and more for an infamous trip taken to North Vietnam in 1972, when she was pictured sitting on an anti-aircraft gun that would go on to be used against American soldiers.

She was dubbed “Hanoi Jane” after that — and the nickname stuck.

It’s incredibly odd for anyone to say that no artist has contributed more to the country than Fonda. For starters, how about actors Dean Cain or Erik Estrada, men who now work as reserve police officers in Idaho? Or how about the amazing Gary Sinise, who works tirelessly to provide homes to America’s injured veterans?

Though it’s an absurd statement, it’s fitting coming from a proven hypocrite like Michael Moore.

These two deserve each other.
