Michael Moore Stoops to a Terrible New Low

Michael Moore continually finds new lows to hit. The same person who owes his career comeback to the November 2016 election of Donald Trump just compared people who voted for the president to “rapists” — and even managed to call them “racist,” too, in a Tuesday appearance on CNN.

Moore is a filmmaker whose documentaries already had come under scrutiny for their deceptive editing and interview tactics before Trump ever became a serious candidate for president. During the presidency of George W. Bush, Moore tried to paint himself as an everyman. He was against big corporations pushing around the little guy, he was against the wars, he was a liberal rebel celebrated by Hollywood, and he was even given an Academy Award in 2003 for best documentary feature, for “Bowling for Columbine.”

Then came the presidency of Barack Obama. The wars raged on, the little guy was pushed around, and Moore was oddly nowhere to be found. He essentially took a break, putting out minor work here and there and only occasionally commenting on the president’s actions or policies. He proved himself a partisan hypocrite and someone motivated not by ideology, but by easy profit made on the backs of extremists looking for any and all criticism of one side of the political debate.

When Trump became the Republican nominee for president, well — Moore the rebel was back. He was suddenly against all the things he’d been against when George W. Bush was in office. Moore saw fresh opportunity — and he has capitalized big time.

He’s already released a movie focused on the president, he’s starring in a Broadway show about the man, and he’s got a television show, too. You could say Moore has given President Trump more airtime than most other people.

But he went too far Tuesday night. Speaking with CNN host Don Lemon, the 63-year-old Moore proved once and for all that he trades only in extreme generalizations that promote ignorance and division.

After saying the president is “absolutely a racist,” Moore implied that the majority of Trump voters supported the president’s statements at his most recent press conference, something that would be very hard to prove.

Lemon then said Trump voters may take offense to being called racist or being told they support a racist — to which Moore replied, “If you hold down the woman while the rapist is raping her, but you didn’t rape her, are you a rapist?”

He added, “Let’s cut the BS. Let’s start speaking honestly.” Moore then took things a step further even after Lemon questioned how far his statement went. “If you are there, and if it you participate — even though you’re not the actual person doing it — if you helped to put Donald Trump in office, you need to think about this before you kneel down and say your prayers tonight,” Moore said. “Think about this person that you now have leading this country.”

Yet comparing Trump voters to “rapists” was still not enough for him. He said supporters of the president were downright “racist.” “If you still support the racist, you are the racist,” he said. “I’m not letting anybody off the hook here. White people who voted for him — America has to stand up. We cannot any longer [be] mealy-mouth about this. Anybody who enables, anybody who votes for and supports a racist, is a racist. You are culpable, white America, I’m sorry. But there is redemption for you.”

Moore lives in a bubble. To him, every non-Hillary Clinton voter is a white supremacist. According to him, former Navy SEAL and “Lone Survivor” Marcus Luttrell (who spoke at the RNC in support of Trump) is a “racist” for his vote. According to him, some of the survivors of the Benghazi terror attack are “racist.” According to him, his Hollywood peers — such as Dean Cain and Kevin Sorbo — are “racist.”

That is clearly nonsense. Nearly all conservatives have condemned the actions in Charlottesville, and Trump’s feet have been put to the fire for his handling of the situation in press conferences.

This sort of extreme generalizations may play well with Moore’s liberal base, and they may help to sell Broadway tickets and make people forget about his silent hypocrisy during Obama’s time in office — but they do nothing to help our country move forward. These generalizations and the ignorant hatred and inability to see beyond one’s small reality hurt the culture and the country, and add to the downright frightening division in this nation right now.
