After three low-rated and highly criticized episodes of her program on NBC News, many people — including members of the media — are wondering how much time Megyn Kelly has left in her news career.

A compelling piece in Variety by television critic Sonia Saraiya is headlined: “NBC’s Megyn Kelly Problem.” In it, Saraiya says Kelly’s “star is dimmer than ever” and that “by all measures, her ‘Sunday Night’ effort has been a disaster.”

In terms of ratings, Kelly’s show has been losing to reruns of “60 Minutes” — and that’s not good for someone who is reportedly earning $17.5 million a year from this stint.

Even worse — Saraiya notes in her Variety piece that Kelly has “alienated everyone” since her move from Fox News to NBC.

Saraiya writes:

“On NBC, Kelly is didactic without being trustworthy; patronizing without being impressive. Her voiceover suggests doom without really proving it; there’s a scare-mongering side to her reportage. And, most importantly: She’s alienated everyone. At this point, Kelly’s most virulent critique comes from the right — the audience that she’s supposed to be helping deliver to NBC. The network is presumably hoping that centrist or center-right women will eventually tune in.”

CNN media reporter Brian Stetler also reported this week there’s a chance Kelly’s future with NBC may be entirely in doubt.

“After three episodes of Megyn Kelly’s ‘Sunday Night,’ TV execs are asking: Will the newsmag come back after the fall/winter NFL season?” asked Stetler, according to Breitbart News.

Kelly’s show is scheduled to have a limited summer run and then break for football season; it’s supposed to return in the spring of 2018 on a more regular basis. However, with her track record thus far, that future remains in question.

Despite a lack of support for Kelly from either side of the political aisle, NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke is trying to stand by his investment.

“She’s a big star, and there aren’t that many big stars in the news business,” he told The Hollywood Reporter in a story published Wednesday. “Somebody with that kind of star power — it is complicated bringing her over without disturbing other people, but I think she’s doing a great job.”

Burke may want to put a fresh spin on Kelly’s move to his network — but her show is clearly a disaster after a highly criticized softball interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin and a controversial and manipulative interview with InfoWars founder and host Alex Jones.

In a blurb accompanying its new piece on Kelly, Variety asked, “Did NBC make a $17.5m mistake?”

After three weeks and almost zero good news coming out of her highly publicized show, the question is almost rhetorical at this point.
