After spending decades as one of Hollywood’s most influential and powerful producers, Harvey Weinstein has now found himself losing public support and platforms within his own industry. That’s due to a shocking report last week from The New York Times that detailed his years of mistreating women employees and coercing and bullying them for sex or sexual favors.

The Weinstein Company, which Harvey co-founded with his brother Bob after the two split from the successful Miramax, even announced Sunday night that its board of directors decided to remove Harvey Weinstein from the company.

“In light of new information about misconduct by Harvey Weinstein that has emerged in the past few days, the directors of The Weinstein Company — Robert Weinstein, Lance Maerov, Richard Koenigsberg, and Tarak Ben Ammar — have determined, and have informed Harvey Weinstein, that his employment with The Weinstein Company is terminated, effective immediately,” the company’s board of representatives said in a public statement.

The allegations against Weinstein were beyond damaging to him personally and professionally, as many were from leaked documents detailing payouts to victims of Weinstein’s advances. Two high-profile actresses, Ashley Judd and Rose McGowan, have gone on record about their experiences with the producer.

McGowan, who received a payout from Weinstein in the ’90s, told The Hollywood Reporter it wasn’t just Weinstein who needed to change his behavior, but many men within the industry.

“Hollywood’s power is dying because society has changed and grown, yet Hollywood male behavior has not.”

“Hollywood’s power is dying because society has changed and grown, and yet Hollywood male behavior has not. It is so not a good look. In the way-cooler-than-Hollywood world I live and work in, I am actually embarrassed to be associated with it.”

The “Scream” actress also called on the Weinstein Company board of directors to resign. “I’m calling on the board to resign effective immediately.”

To make matters worse, Weinstein’s public statement about the revelations did little in the way of denying his alleged behavior.

The producer instead said he was “from a different time” and seeking “tutoring” to better his ways.

Worse still was the fact that his public statement ended with a pronouncement about his long-held liberal beliefs — he said he was going to be focusing his energy on taking on the NRA.

That’s a fight that is unlikely to happen, as Weinstein has made such hypocritical and empty statements before, and he has few political friends left. Many have begun returning donations from the outspoken producer.

Though many have come out publicly against Weinstein, there has been a worrisome silence from some of his most public supporters. Former President Barack Obama, to whom Weinstein made financial donations, has said nothing about Weinstein’s alleged behavior. Former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has also remained silent; she, too, benefited from Weinstein’s donations and was friendly with the movie mogul.

Many A-listers in Hollywood who have longstanding relationships with Weinstein have kept silent, such as writer-director Quentin Tarantino, who has worked with Weinstein on every single movie he has directed in his career.

The newest episode of “Saturday Night Live” was mocked on social media for not addressing the Weinstein controversy. According to the Daily Mail, producer Lorne Michaels said after the show that he chose not to touch the Weinstein scandal on his satire show because “it’s a New York thing” — Weinstein is from New York City.

President Donald Trump, who was also born in New York City and is mocked mercilessly on “SNL,” commented on the Weinstein revelations to the press briefly and said he was “not surprised.”

With Weinstein now losing his position at his own company, one can expect plenty more people in the industry to come forward, as presumably they’ll feel safer in not getting professional blowback. Yet their silence thus far has been deafening and is an absolute shame.
