In a Friday appearance on “The Laura Ingraham Show,” former football coach and current college football analyst Lou Holtz did not hold back on the topic of football players in the NFL kneeling for the national anthem.

“Where was all this kneeling at the preseason before the rosters were set? It didn’t matter much to you when you were trying to make the team. You didn’t care to make your position known when you had something to lose and didn’t have a contract yet. But now that you have your contract etc., you will make a statement,” said Holtz.

Holtz served as the head coach for The College of William & Mary, North Carolina State University, the University of Arkansas, the University of Minnesota, the University of Notre Dame, the University of South Carolina — and the New York Jets. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008.

Holtz was also a field artillery officer in the United States Army Reserve.

He has a point about these NFL kneelers. Many would likely have been too scared to do their kneeling or protesting before team rosters were set for the season — especially since Colin Kaepernick (the original kneeler from last season) was unable to find a team to draft him for this season. Many believe that’s due to his protesting and his distracting political activities.

Lou Holtz had previously told Fox News in an interview that politics have no place in sports.

“The first thing I told the football team every fall: ‘We will not use our football team to promote any cause, whether it be abortion, gay rights, gun laws; we’re here to promote this university … and you aren’t going to bring a cause onto our football team.'”
