Considering the ugly things Stephen Colbert has said about Donald Trump in the past and the fact that he has centered his career around criticizing the president, people may be a little surprised by his latest comments.

On his most recent late-night talk show, Colbert actually praised Trump for his recent thoughts on gun control.

“I have no explanation for what happened this afternoon,” said a stunned Colbert to his audience. Colbert then called Trump’s recent bipartisan meeting with members of Congress about finding a solution to gun violence “great.”

Colbert took some swipes at Republican lawmakers, gun owners and Trump’s criticisms of former President Barack Obama — but he then praised the president because he “turned on the Republicans in the room.”

Colbert showed a clip of Trump’s criticizing Republican lawmakers for being too loyal to the NRA, and then another one of the president going after a Republican-suggested provision to any potential bill concerning concealed carry across state lines.

“He’s … he’s being reasonable? Jimmy, can we cut to the camera inside my skull right now?” said Colbert.

A clip was then shown of a girl yelling, “What is happening!?”

Colbert continued, “God, she’s — God, she’s really loud. I’ve got to give credit to Donald Trump. I never thought he’d go there, but not only did he go there, he went way past there to a place no one had a ticket for.”

Colbert continued his praises by showing a clip of the president cutting off Vice President Mike Pence in regard to “due process” when it comes to taking people’s guns away.

“Or, Mike, take the firearms first and then go to court,” said Trump to his vice president.

He later said, “Take the guns first. Go through due process second.”

Colbert’s response? “Well, he’s finally doing something Obama never did: He’s coming for your guns. And that’s groundbreaking.”

We are truly living in an upside down world when a Republican president is sounding harsher on gun rights than Obama — and Colbert is singing the praises of a man he has too frequently used as a lame punchline.
