If you go on her onstage ability alone, Lena Dunham never has been much of a star. Her HBO show “Girls” never has drawn much in the way of ratings and seems to gather critical acclaim only from her cocktail party socialite friends in Manhattan — you know, the people who can’t fathom the plight and frustration of the millions of average Americans who helped elect Donald Trump the next president of the United States.

Dunham’s way to remain in the spotlight appears to be to do and say a lot of outlandish things. The public that does adore her — the New York-based media — continues to amplify those wild remarks with its trademark mindless coverage.

But she promised to leave the country if Trump were elected — and after her latest mindless stunt, it might be time for her to look into keeping that promise.

Dunham spoke glowingly on a recent podcast about her “brave” friends and family who have had abortions. She even featured her producer who had had an abortion.

“I, the woman who cares as much as anybody about a woman’s right to choose, felt it was important that people know that I was unblemished in this department,” Dunham, 30, said during the podcast.

“So many people I love — my mother, my best friends — have had to have abortions for all kinds of reasons. I feel so proud of them for their bravery, for their self-knowledge. And it was a really important moment for me then to realize that I had internalized some of what society was throwing at us, and I had to put it in the garbage.”

So yes, to that point — here is vague, banal agit-speak from someone with little clue or interest in finding out how the real world works.

But that wasn’t enough. It was just “regular” stupid — not the attention-grabbing type to which this individual usually aspires. So she went further in attempting to be deep.

“Now I can say that I still haven’t had an abortion, but I wish I had,” she said.

What?

After much uproar over her obtuse comments, Dunham wrote on Instagram yesterday that all of this was a “joke.” “I truly hope a distasteful joke on my part won’t diminish the amazing work of all the women who participated,” she said.

On the podcast, Dunham wasn’t joking. She thought she was being edgy, deep, nuanced, and provocative. It was only in the clarifying daylight of backlash that she realized she meant to chuckle at the end of that line.

Abortion may indeed be a joke as well as a backup means of birth control for Lena Dunham’s circle of Manhattanite friends. But it is not a joke at all to women in the real world. It is not a joke to the millions of people who understand and believe that life begins at the moment of conception and that all life is worthy of protection and care.

As someone who is pregnant right now with her first child, I cannot imagine a woman “wishing for” an abortion. After seeing the sonogram of my baby girl’s heart beating, sucking her thumb and moving her little hands and toes around, it is unfathomable to me that anyone would find humor in terminating a pregnancy.

The entertainer is sorry only that this incident appears to be costing her fans.

Years ago, I spoke to Norma McCorvey, who was “Jane Roe” in the pivotal Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade and is now a converted pro-life Catholic. She told me about the weight of the millions of abortions on her soul. It moved her to tears to think of all the children never born because of her court case and how the abortion industry had used her to push its agenda.

Dunham consistently shows her naivete about politics. She behaves as if she has a megaphone because of her visibility in the media and Hollywood — but she still doesn’t realize the extent to which she has been “useful” for Hillary Clinton, modern misguided feminist causes, and Planned Parenthood.

“You know how in some households you curse and have to put money in a jar? Well, in mine, if you mess up your pro-choice messaging, you have to give a sizable donation to abortion funds,” she wrote in her apology on Instagram.

That is offensively silly right to the end. This entertainer is not sorry she said wished she’d had an abortion. She’s sorry it appears to be costing her fans.

When her show ends next year and all we’re left with is the tastelessness and overrated stardom that seems already to be wearing thin on the public, let’s hope Americans give her something to really worry about — and tune her out for good.
