Lady Gaga’s halftime performance during the Super Bowl Sunday night was far less politically divisive than many expected. She certainly opened it dramatically enough, high atop a stage, where — under a starry sky — she sang snippets of “God Bless America” and “This Land Is Your Land” before plummeting to the stage below.

It was a clear, quasi-subtle acknowledgment of these troubled times, where leftist celebrities are seizing every opportunity to express discontent with President Donald Trump and the immigration policies meant to protect America. Gaga seemed not to be interested in any sort of political statements. She even included the words “under God” when reciting part of the Pledge of Allegiance during the performance.

To be sure, the chart-topping performer promptly moved on — to many of her big hits, from “Poker Face” to “Born This Way,” while even working in new tunes, like “Million Reasons,” which she did from behind a piano toward her set’s end.

She may get criticized by some in the world of celebrity for the restraint she exercised, but the show should be applauded for expressing a love of country, and unity, and leaving it at that. Be that as it may, anyone looking for a loud political statement — and that would be many — were probably disappointed, and inevitably will be vocal.

Gaga did what she went to the Super Bowl to do. Of course, one question does hang in the air: Had Hillary Clinton won the election, would Gaga have kicked off her set the same way? And if not, why not? Maybe easing into one’s halftime performance with “God Bless America” should be the norm no matter what.

Donald Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, was a fan of Gaga’s performance — tweeting after the set, “Incredible performance by @ladygaga.”
