Despite the criticism he’s received from his fellow artists, singer Kanye West has refused to waver in his support of President Donald Trump.

In a recent interview with The New York Times, West described the freedom he felt when he broke away from “mob thought” and shared on Twitter his admiration for the president.

“I felt that I knew people who voted for Trump that were celebrities … were scared to say that they liked him,” he told The Times. “But they told me, and I liked him, and I’m not scared to say what I like. Let me come over here and get in this fight with you.”

West said many people feel so negatively about Trump because they were so shocked by his victory.

“There were people who said Trump would never win,” he said. “I’m talking about the ‘it-will-never-happens’ of the world, people in high school told you things would never happen.”

West said it was partly Trump’s underdog status in the 2016 presidential race that was appealing to the rapper, as he’s felt like an underdog his entire career.

In another interesting bit, West actually said he wished Bernie Sanders would have been Trump’s vice president — so both their visions could have influenced the country.

While West’s politics are not the easiest to track, the rapper deserves credit for daring to express independent thought at a time that Hollywood and the music industry clearly do not appreciate such things.
