It doesn’t take much courage to stand on a stage in front of wining and dining Hollywood elites and denounce President Donald Trump. Everyone there would likely agree with you. Nearly everyone would clap. It’s pretty much expected at today’s awards shows.

One artist used Sunday night’s 59th Grammy Awards to show other artists some actual bravery and individualism in the face of an increasingly polarizing and divisive entertainment industry. Singer Joy Villa — who sometimes goes by the name Princess Joy Villa — walked the red carpet Sunday night in a gown that proclaimed, “Make America Great Again.”

One artist used Sunday night’s 59th Grammy Awards to show other artists actual individualism.

The dress — of red, white, and blue fabric — looked considerably better when compared to other fashion choices of the night. Musician CeeLo Green, for example, dressed up as some kind of golden wizard.

The designer of Villa’s dress, Andre Soriano, said on Instagram the inspired gown is a “tribute to OUR President Of The United States of America.”

Villa herself wrote on Instagram, “Sometimes you just gotta be free to express yourself. Thank you to all of my supporters and fellow believers. Life is about living free and loving it. Be your beautiful selves tonight!”

The singer continued by explaining the motivation behind her dress: “Go big, or go home. You can either stand for what you believe or fall for what you don’t. Above all make a choice for tolerance and love. Agree to disagree. See the person over the politics, carry yourself with dignity, always. Life is made to be lived, so go boldly and give no effs.”

Villa faced outrage from those who’d rather see one of their own make the predictable political statements about Trump.

Still, Villa kept things positive, which makes her decision all the more interesting and commendable. The singer also saw a major boost in sales and social media followers.

The 25-year old musician was not up for any awards on Sunday night, but she has a handful of popular songs under her belt. She has also acted in television shows such as “Heroes” and “CSI: NY.” She was born in Orange County, California, and has been performing since she was very young. Currently she lives in New York City, though she’s also lived in Hollywood, Las Vegas, and Seattle. She identifies as biracial: Her father was Italian-American and her mother was African-American and Choctaw Indian.
