There are so few original ideas out of Hollywood these days — even in a place that houses more writers and other creative people than likely anywhere else in the world.

Just look at television for the sad truth. Much of what the networks are putting out today are reboots of classic movies and shows that have little to do with their original concepts. The goal is to exploit a brand name for attention.

This fall will see a reboot of the much-beloved soap opera, “Dynasty,” to air on CW. The recently released trailer may have fans of the original scratching their heads.

The ’80s series, which ran for 220 episodes, followed the inner workings and drama of the wealthy Carrington family of Denver. Evolving rivalries and family squabbles kept fans tuning into the immensely popular drama for nine seasons — and though there seems little need to redo the show, Hollywood found a reason.

The reboot changes just about everything that’s recognizable from the original series. It’s still about a wealthy family, but it now takes place in sunny Atlanta instead of snowy Denver. Plenty of family dynamics and rivalries have changed as well.

The biggest difference, however, has to be in tone. While “Dynasty” was always a show that pushed the envelope, it had a certain class to it. It was imaginative in the ways it presented its convoluted plots and more racy storylines. The new show seems desperate for attention, as it lays it all on the table. It’s nothing but skin, skin, skin.

The darker and racier reboot is in line with what the CW has been doing as of late. Moving into its second season this fall is “Riverdale,” a dark reboot of the rather innocent “Archie” comic series.

Not everyone is impressed with or excited about the new spin on “Dynasty.”

There is some good news for fans, though. Along with the reboot, the CW will be adding the original series to its CW Seed streaming platform — for anyone who needs a classic series to binge and for all those who recognize the strength of the original.
