In 2004, Washington made a significant donation to Fisher House, which provides housing to military families when a member of the service has been injured.

The award-winning actor and filmmaker did this after learning of the need for more space after some military facilities had exceeded their capacities due to the wounded from military combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.

In addition to supporting the military through personal contributions, Washington, 62, has also been an outspoken critic of those in Hollywood who compare a movie set to a battlefield. He’s one of the few artists who displays a humbleness in his work — and notes the contrast with everyday Americans.

“It’s like when people talk about the difficulty of making a movie, and I’m like, send your son to Iraq, that’s difficult,” the Oscar-winning actor said during a roundtable discussion among directors set up in 2016 by The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s just a movie.
