Donald Trump’s Oscars Tweet Rattles Jimmy Kimmel
The late-night host took a jab at the president and tried his best to explain away the ratings disaster of the Academy Awards
Jimmy Kimmel aimed so many barbs at President Donald Trump during Sunday night’s Academy Awards ceremony, you would think he’d want a bit of a break from that activity.
Instead, Kimmel is continuing to center his comedy around the president. It seems the late-night host was a little shaken by a recent tweet Trump put out criticizing the atrocious ratings of the Oscars this year.
“I got a little surprise this morning. I woke up, I brushed my teeth, I looked at my phone and I got a text that said, ‘Look at Trump’s Twitter account’ — as if I wasn’t going to do that any anyway. It is what I do every morning and so I did and this is what I see: ‘Lowest rated Oscars in HISTORY. Problem is, we don’t have Stars anymore — except your President (just kidding!)’ He’s not narcissistic. It’s a joke,” said Kimmel on his show.
He continued, "Trump loves saying the ratings are down to insinuate that is a show of some kind of support for him. But the truth is every year since Netflix happened, ratings are down for every big TV show — the Super Bowl, Grammys, Emmys, Golden Globes."
He continued, "But Trump thinks he caused the ratings to go down. So since I was the host of the Oscars, I felt like it was incumbent upon me to respond, so I tweeted to him: 'Thanks, lowest-rated President in history.' I want to point out that my tweet got more than twice as many likes as his tweet. That is the sort of thing that would get under his orange skin."
Kimmel couldn't stop himself: "Trump always has a problem with the Academy Awards, which is surprising because I really think he would really love the Best Picture winner, 'The Shape of Water.' The movie, if you haven't seen it, is about a monster who has sex with a woman who can't talk about it. Basically — it's like his life story right on the screen."
This late-night liberal host may not be able to accept it, but ratings are down on these programs because the American people are sick of popular culture being hijacked by political agendas.
He's part of the problem and doesn't even realize it.
