3.) “Lincoln” (2012). Maybe “Lincoln” had some small role to play in Day-Lewis’ reason for retirement. The film was his most popular at the box office — and was also a cultural phenomenon when released in 2012. It won Day-Lewis his third Academy Award. It’s certainly a high note on which to bow out.

While some questioned Spielberg’s decision to cast Day-Lewis as Abraham Lincoln, few questioned the move after seeing the picture.

The actor painted a clear picture of the president, one that could be admired by audiences no matter their political persuasion. The film earned Day-Lewis extra press attention for his form of method acting, one in which he never broke character during he filming.
