The well-known department store Nordstrom has decided to sever ties with Ivanka Trump’s brand, which sells handbags, women’s clothing, and shoes.

Nordstrom has been slowly decreasing its available merchandise from the product line belonging to the president’s daughter for weeks. The company publicly said the reason for not carrying the products in the future has to do with sales.

“Each year we cut about 10 percent [of brands carried] and refresh our assortment with about the same amount,” a spokesperson told Business Insider. “In this case, based on the brand’s performance, we’ve decided not to buy it for this season.”

Despite the public statement — many people speculate the ending of the business relationship has much more to do with politics than capitalism.

Shannon Coulter is co-founder of the Grab Your Wallet campaign. The goal of the campaign is to get businesses to drop all Trump-related merchandise, including Ivanka Trump’s line of products.

The Grab Your Wallet website lists the stores and contact information for destinations carrying Trump products.

Previously, a letter regarding Ivanka Trump’s brand written to Nordstrom from a customer went viral. The letter called Ivanka Trump products “toxic” and encouraged the business to drop all related merchandise. The company responded in November by saying, “We hope that offering a vendor’s products isn’t misunderstood as us taking a political position; we’re not.”

That stance has likely changed in the wake of an organized movement like Grab Your Wallet. And Shoes.com, a Canadian company, also dropped Ivanka Trump products back in November as a response to the Grab Your Wallet campaign. The company tweeted, “We understand and your voices have been heard. We have removed the products from our website.”

Other companies to have severed ties with Ivanka Trump’s company include Bellacor and RueLaLa, according to the Grab Your Wallet website.

Other major targets of the Grab Your Wallet movement include Macy’s, Amazon, and Zappos.

Grab Your Wallet advocates obviously see the impact on Ivanka Trump’s line as a success.

Meanwhile — others see the boycotts and pressure on companies as extreme and unproductive.

There are now many calls on Twitter for a boycott of Nordstrom.

The boycotting of Ivanka Trump and her company is strange indeed. The successful young business owner had already announced she is stepping away from her business to help with public policy affairs.

“I’m stepping away from my business … My father will be president, and hopefully, I can be there to support him and to support those causes I’ve cared about my whole professional career,” Ivanka Trump told ABC News in a recent interview.

Think about the actual victims of this boycott. Ivanka Trump’s line of accessories and clothing are a piece of her brand, but they certainly don’t define it. She can be successful with or without the business. A boycott like this merely hurts the men and women who make these products, sell these products, ship them, and otherwise work with or for the company.

While people have been advocating for destroying Ivanka Trump’s business, the president’s daughter has made clear in public speeches and interviews that she will advocate for equal pay for women in the workplace and better health care services for women. Her newest book, “Women Who Work: Rewriting the Rules for Success,” will also hit store shelves in March.

The proceeds of the book will be given to charities that support women and women’s causes.
