Broadway Casts Can’t Cope

Post-election America is somehow turning out to be just as unpredictable as pre-election America. The great political and cultural divide remains an expanding valley.

This was further proven by Vice President-Elect Mike Pence’s attendance at the hit Broadway musical, “Hamilton” — and what resulted from that. Pence was not just booed at the show by audience members, he was given a direct lecture by the cast of the play as he exited the theater. The vice president-elect, a true gentleman, paused to hear the message.

“We, sir, are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us — our planet, our children, our parents — or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir. But we truly hope this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to work on behalf of all of us. All of us,” cast member Brandon Victor Dixon said, directly targeting Pence from the stage and asking him to stay for the political message.

“Hamilton,” which casts a racially diverse ensemble as characters like George Washington, has been a friendly one to the Left. Creator Lin-Manuel Miranda was a Clinton donor and outspoken critic of Trump during the campaign. President Obama, a politician with an atrocious record even by the standards of the Left, also held a fundraiser at a “Hamilton” performance — in addition to having gotten a private performance of the play before it hit Broadway.

Mike Pence, a paying theater customer according to The New York Times, has taken the public message from the “Hamilton” cast in a cordial, classy way. In an interview with “Fox News Sunday” after the performance gained headlines, Pence said, “I’ll leave it to others to decide if [the stage] was the appropriate venue.” He said no apology was necessary and the mix of cheers and boos from the audience “is what freedom sounds like.” He even added that he “enjoyed the show.”

Some leftist public figures had no sign of such grace in their response to the actions of the “Hamilton” creators. After President-Elect Donald Trump tweeted that the treatment of Pence was “rude,” filmmaker Michael Moore responded, “Ha! Rude? You & Pencey haven’t seen anything yet. Millions of us are going 2 be everywhere. U will not get away w/ what you’re planning 2 do.”

“If Trump gets upset at a NY theater audience booing his VP, imagine what he’ll feel like on inauguration when millions cry out against him,” tweeted “Star Trek” actor and Trump critic George Takei.

Not every artist stood behind the calling out of Mike Pence at the public venue. “Sopranos” actor and E-Street band member Steven Van Zandt wrote on Twitter, “You don’t single out an audience member and embarrass him from the stage. A terrible precedent to set.”

After election night, the cast and crew of  “Hamilton” were apparently so upset by Trump’s victory and Hillary Clinton’s defeat they could barely perform their show, The New York Times reported. Are we now going to see “safe spaces” added to the Great White Way? Cuddly animals to console creative people? Play-Doh to soothe their hurt feelings? Cry-ins that occur backstage? Anything is possible.
