If Alec Baldwin wins an Emmy in September for his portrayal of President Donald Trump on “Saturday Night Live,” he may want to issue a public thanks to the president.

As a Trump impersonator, Baldwin has flown seamlessly from someone embroiled in almost constant personal controversy to one over whom the media fawn. In other words, people actually remember and know who he is.

Before Trump came along, Baldwin was about two steps away from being a 50-year-old male version of Lindsay Lohan. He’d essentially disappeared after a tape of him verbally insulting his daughter went public. He’d had numerous run-ins with the press and paparazzi, including one in which he reportedly used a homophobic slur against a photographer, which he denied doing).

But his Trump impression has put him back in the limelight and has the media pretty well forgetting any previous bad headlines concerning the actor. Baldwin now has a regular gig, plus a new book hitting shelves at the end of the year  — something he co-wrote from the perspective of his parody version of Trump. Mind you, this is all coming after Baldwin said he had plans to retire his act earlier this year (yeah, right).

Gold Derby, which predicts awards show nominations and winners, has put out a prediction that Baldwin is going to be a favorite for a nomination and an Emmy win in September for Best Supporting Comedy Actor.

Twelve out of 15 journalists from top media outlets predicted Baldwin would win at the Emmys — he’s portrayed his character too many times to be considered a “guest star.” Only three disagreed.

Emmy nominations are not announced until July 14, but betting people keep a close eye on outlets such as Gold Derby.

Voters may feel inclined to make a political statement.

It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the recognition of Baldwin at the Emmys, since Hollywood award shows are becoming less and less about art and creative ability, and more and more about pushing blatant political agendas.

Voters this year may feel more inclined to vote for Baldwin as a political statement, rather than as a recognition of the best supporting comedy performance.

However it works out, it’s clear at this point that Baldwin is in the midst of a career comeback. And whether he likes it or not, he owes it all to the man in the White House.
