“He touched all our lives with joy and magic and it will be a strange world without him,” she said.

The actor had a career that spanned six decades and included such celebrated films as “V for Vendetta,” “The Elephant Man,” “Alien,” “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” as well as several “Harry Potter” entries. Hurt most recently played the part of a priest in last year’s “Jackie.”

Fellow actors have already taken to social media to express their condolences.

Hurt was nominated for two Academy Awards — one for “Elephant Man” in 1980 and another for “Midnight Express” in 1978.

In 2015, Hurt was knighted for his contributions to the art of drama. That same year, he was diagnosed with cancer. Speaking of the diagnosis to Radio Times, the actor said, “I can’t say I worry about mortality, but it’s impossible to get to my age and not have a little contemplation of it.”

He added, “We’re all just passing time, and occupy our chair very briefly.” Hurt is survived by his wife and two sons.
