Louisiana police arrested a machete-wielding man they think may be an illegal immigrant Friday after he attempted to kidnap two young children in a Walmart.

Billy Yoe Budier-Herrera, 33, was charged with an immigration detainer and two counts of second-degree kidnapping of a child, two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of carrying weapons and one count of disturbing the peace, according to a press release from the Kenner Police Department.

Budier-Herrera had “a 10-inch machete, a container of pepper spray, and a makeshift shiv constructed of a plastic handle with razor blades attached by duct tape that had been concealed on his person” when he was arrested.

The immigrant approached a mother and her two-year-old son at a Walmart in Kenner and told her that “if she did not listen to his instructions, she would die,” according to the police.

He blocked the mother when she tried to get away from him and gripped his machete, “causing the mother to fear for she and her child’s safety.” Budier-Herrera then threatened her son’s life and attempted to remove him from the grocery cart, saying he “would also die.”

The mother managed to flee with her son and hide behind a counter as Walmart employees joined the fray. As Budier-Herrera fled, he “aggressively swung” his machete to intimidate the employees before attempting to snatch a baby from another mother’s grocery cart. A strap buckling the baby in to seat prevented Budier-Herrera from succeeding.

The Walmart employees finally succeeded in tackling Budier-Herrera — and an off-duty police officer then detained him.

“At the time of this press release, Budier-Herrera remains in custody, no bond has been set. Budier-Herrera was also charged with an immigration detainer,” the police said, urging the witnesses who captured cellphone footage of the altercation to come forward.
