President Donald Trump said Saturday his introductory summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping resulted in “tremendous friendship and goodwill” as the two engaged in preliminary discussions on a range of sensitive issues facing the two nations.

Trump and first lady Melania Trump hosted Xi and his wife, Madame Peng Liyuan, at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on Thursday and Friday. Both world leaders indicated the meeting was both productive and fruitful.

The relationship developed by President Xi and myself I think is outstanding … and I believe lots of very potentially bad problems will be going away.”

“It was a great honor to have President Xi Jinping and Madame Peng Liyuan of China as our guests in the United States,” Trump tweeted Saturday. “Tremendous … goodwill and friendship was formed, but only time will tell on trade.”

Several key issues loomed over Trump’s meeting with Xi, including the president’s repeated campaign promises to negotiate a more level playing field with China on trade. Trump often accused China of “theft of American jobs” on the campaign trail because of Beijing’s perceived cheating on intellectual property, currency manipulation, and extreme protection of domestic markets.

The day before his meeting with Xi, Trump told reporters on board Air Force One that “We have been treated unfairly and have made terrible trade deals with China for many, many years … That’s one of the things we are going to be talking about.”

But both Trump and Xi cited progress following their meeting at Mar-a-Lago.

“We have made tremendous progress in our relationship with China,” Trump told reporters Friday. “We will be making additional progress. The relationship developed by President Xi and myself I think is outstanding … and I believe lots of very potentially bad problems will be going away.”

Xi told reporters through a translator Friday that, “We had long and in-depth communication.”

“And, more importantly, we have further built up understanding and establish a kind of trust, and we have initially built up a working relationship and friendship,” Xi added.

Xinhua, Chinas official news agency, said Saturday that the Trump-Xi meeting had been “positive and fruitful” while sending a “clear-cut” that the two countries can learn to work together more productively, Bloomberg reported.

Trump administration officials further noted that the two world leaders discussed a range of topics from trade to North Korea to human rights abuses and cybersecurity concerns. White House press secretary Sean Spicer said in a statement Friday that the two “established a new and cabinet-level framework” for future discussions.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson noted that “President Trump noted the challenges caused by Chinese government intervention in its economy and raised serious concerns.” Although the topic of North Korean aggression was discussed and Tillerson said that Xi had agreed to increase China’s cooperation with the U.S., he did not elaborate further.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin expressed optimism, saying, “We have very similar economic interests, and there are areas where they clearly want to work with us.” He added that both men discussed a “more balanced economic relationship, specifically on trade.”

In addition, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross noted that “the most interesting thing to me was they expressed an interest in reducing their net trade balance because of the impact it’s having on money supply and inflation. Thats the first time I’d heard them say that.”
